APMA - Martial Arts End of Year Awards 2012

HISTORY
HISTORY

"IF WE FORGET OUR PAST, THEN WE APT TO REPEAT OUR MISTAKES"

The Association of Professional Martial Artists was formed on the 27th day of November 2004 and registered twelve members. "Martial Arts Forever, Crime and Drugs Never" is the motto of APMA; A brainchild of Sensei Benny Chitolie. In his quest for the unity and development of martial arts in St. Lucia, Chitolie felt it was neccessary to have an organization that catered for the needs of the founders and members, with regards to international recognition, style certification, and certification of the various practices and disciplines of the sport. Additionally another aim of APMA IS TO elevate the awareness of martial arts and the benefits to St. Lucia as a tool to combat the present level of indiscipline, crime and violence in society. According to Chitolie, The APMA was also formed to give recognition to the forefathers and founders of the martial arts in St. Lucia.

The APMA comprises some of the most qualified and longest practicing martial arts experts in St. Lucia. Chitolie added "we are going to ensure that all members receive proper certifications and ranks, towards ensuring that they are internationally recognized and accepted".

MEMBERS

Martial arts expert Linus Degazon, one of the founding members of APMA lamented the fact that it took so long to establish such an organization. He went on to say that the plans of the association are some of the things he has been looking forward to for the art in St. Lucia for a long time after the D'Auvergne era with the Martial Arts Commission. Sensei Errol Weekes, the longest surviving martial arts expert in St. Lucia, said that he is exhilarated with the upcoming plans and programs for the members of the organization, especially the impact on the youth. Sensei Clifton Sealy who has ventured into other districts in St. Lucia as he aims to promote the sport, indicated that no other organization has been formed with the interest of martial arts practitioners at heart, and that he is proud to be a founding member of APMA.

MEMBER DEGAZON

Sensei Allan Giffard applauded the formation and said that the organization is neccessary mainly as result of the martial arts not evolving as it should throughout the years and the fact that the majority of martial arts instructors alongside their clubs were not benefiting from the various national martial arts organizations that were currently in existence such as the Martial Arts Commission.

GIFFARD

The statement "Karate is dead in St. Lucia" was a sentiment shared by most of its practitioners to the point that a number of clubs especially those practicing open or free styles were on the verge of giving up. It was at this crossroad and for these reasons that the APMA came to light. The launching took place almost immediately after its formation and the cocktail reception was held at the Bay Gardens Inn in Rodney Bay on the 22nd of January 2005, where every member were properly graded, their ranks certified and their styles were recognized via APMA under the supervision of Professor Marty Cale, Dr. Dan Netherland, and Billl "Superfoot" Wallace. Durind that period a number of seminars were carried out and the members of APMA also became certified Defensive Tactics Instructors and trained in the Israeli Defense Forces martial arts system called "Krav Maga". Seminars were held for security personnel on the island and organizations such as Consolidated Foods Ltd, The National Insurance Corporation, and a few Hotels benefited again through this formation. The special invited guests were Mrs. Fortuna Belrose, Mr. Claudius Francis a former karateka, and Mr. Joseph "Reds' Pereira all of whom addressed the gathering with great words of wisdom and encouragment.
